Learning English in USA

Hello LCI Guest,

Welcome back to our blog where we discuss different topics about our Programs, our students and classes, cultural events and activities. LCI Language Centers is a place where we want everyone to feel safe and included. We look for ways to build our students for success in language and in everyday life situations. So, this week we would like to discuss parking around our school and other ways to avoid traffic citations.

A traffic sign that says no parking here to corner in front of a stucco wall

As you may know, LCI Language Centers in located right outside of Downtown Houston, and in the beautiful and diverse Montrose area. Our school is located next to The University of St. Thomas, and across from the Greek Orthodox School. With this being said, it is very important to obey the traffic signs you see, or you could receive a ticket violation.

You will see signs that say, “NO PARKING TO CORNER” or “NO PARKING SCHOOL DAYS FROM 7AM-9AM and 2PM-4PM” you will also see signs that say “SPEED LIMIT 20” with the times the speed limit is enforced. It is important to pay attention to these signs to avoid being stopped by a police officer or receiving a parking violation on your car window. Be cautious of stop signs and driveways when trying to park. It is illegal to park at a stop sign or block someone’s driveway. Doing so could get your car towed away.

Also, remember to keep up with your car’s monthly insurance and vehicle inspection. If you do not have one or the other, you could get pulled over and given a ticket.

We are an international school, so our students come with many visas that give them permission to be in America. It is extremely important to keep this documentation on you incase you do have an interaction with a police officer. (Proper documentation would be your Driver license or passport, along with your I-94/I-797A form, and your school letter.)

We do not mention these things to scare you, but to keep you aware of your surroundings and to prevent you from having an unnecessary encounter. Here at LCI we understand you are in a new country and learning the way the community is structured can be complicated, so we would rather inform you of the traffic violations to prevent them from happening.

You are not alone on your journey, if there is a way we can help, we will. In the words of Maya Angelou, “As you grow older, you will discover you have two hands, one for helping yourself, the other for helping others.”
